London comrades joined other activists from the International Ukraine Anti-Fascist Solidarity movement who were out and about in Brixton last weekend in February.
And they received an extremely positive and friendly response from local people in
the south London borough – a working-class area with high levels of unemployment and poverty – at their picket on Saturday.
Many people showed their support and had discussions with the protesters.
These are some of the comments we had from the local people:
“Why are we giving all that money to that guy in Ukraine (Zelensky)? He’s got houses all over the world…We need that money for ordinary people here!”
“Fuck NATO! They are killing the whole world!”, and
“Spend money on people here, not on Ukraine, Look around you, you can see the devastation here!”
“Zelensky is a horrible man!”
“Thank you for what you’re doing”
“I agree with every single thing you’re saying”.
Many others simply gave a thumbs up sign.
Only one person made a negative comment, saying “You’re wrong to support Palestine and not support Ukraine”.
This reflects our assessment that the political elite in Britain is completely out of step with ordinary people in its views on Ukraine.
Last week a Facebook post by the leader of the Reform Party (a new rapidly growing right wing party), Richard Tice, attracted dozens of comments attacking NATO-EU policies on Ukraine all the way back to 2014, which received the hundredth likes, while a small minority of people who defended NATO received fewer than 5 likes.
This backs up our assessment, that most people in Britain do not support the Zelensky dictatorship in Ukraine. But you would never hear this from any major newspaper, TV or radio station in Britain, or from any mainstream politician.
