Activists from International Ukraine Anti Fascist Solidarity protested today opposite the prime minister’s residence in central London today, demanding no missile strikes from Ukraine into Russian territory, genuine negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, and warning of the danger of a full scale war between NATO and the Russian Federation.
The protesters also highlighted the tragedy of many thousands of Ukrainian soldiers losing their lives after NATO deliberately prevented an agreement to end the war in February-March 2022.
The protest came at a time of greatly increased tensions resulting from President Biden’s vindictive decision to approve missile strikes on Russian territory, the decision of a failed president to disgracefully approve highly dangerous steps having decisively lost the US election after only one term. Biden’s policies on Ukraine and the horrific Israeli crimes in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon were clearly extremely unpopular amongst the people of the United States.
Immediately on taking office last July British prime minister Keir Starmer, who comes from the right wing of the Labour Party, adopted an aggressive position in Ukraine. His request for Washington’s permission to use British missiles against Russian territory, only now granted by Biden, is extremely shortsighted as it will result in unfavorable treatment from the incoming Trump administration.
Moreover, Russian president Vladimir Putin’s warnings that such strikes would mean British assets “anywhere in the world” becoming targets for possible Russian attack were not reported in the British for six months. Only now are these warnings being discussed as if Putiin has only just made them, with our media now full of comparisons with the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
Today’s protest was briefly joined by activists from the West African state of São Tomé and Príncipe, who were protesting against the recent shooting of four supporters of the opposition.
